The Sacramento Choral Calendar

Looking for a New Editor

Would You Like to Manage the Sacramento Choral Calendar?

Dick Frantzreb founded the Sacramento Choral Calendar in 2011, and has maintained it since then.  However, he retired as editor effective 7/31/18, and if you relish the idea of having your finger on the pulse of choral activity in the Sacramento region, this is your opportunity.

The Calendar is a project of the Sacramento Valley Choral Coalition, and so its scope and policies are under the general supervision of the Coalition's Board.  However, the editor has broad discretion in managing the content of the Calendar.

Currently, the Calendar is programmed using Microsoft FrontPage.  It's software that hasn't been updated or supported since 2003, but it is still widely used, and lends itself to the minimal, table-oriented requirements of the current design of the Calendar.  However, the way is open for the Calendar to be redesigned using a more contemporary platform.

Also, the scope of the Calendar's coverage can be changed.  Until now, it has covered all the concerts of community, college and children's choruses, currently about 80 in number.  Public performances of church choirs, as well as high school choir concerts have been included when they have been reported.  Concerts of visiting choruses, as well as special choral events have been also listed.

Information on community and college choruses has been collected by systematic monitoring of their websites (or Facebook pages, if necessary).  The purpose of this approach has been to ensure comprehensive coverage, and not take chances on each organization being reliable to provide its own information.  This approach can, of course, be relaxed.

Maintaining the Calendar is not as time-intensive as it may appear.  Checking each chorus's website three or four times per year has worked out to about a half-day's effort every couple of months.  Updating the Calendar with the collected information, probably averages a half-day's work every month, and that includes daily checks to remove outdated information.

Maintaining the Audition Directory (if that is to be kept), involves about a day's work twice a year.  Adding reviews would require significant additional time — if that feature is to be continued.

Currently, this is a volunteer position, though that may change, especially if some means can be found to monetize the Calendar.  Dick Frantzreb will work closely with the new editor, to give them all the help they might need.  Incidentally, over the past year the Calendar has had between 1,500 and 3,000 unique visitors each month.

Note:  The Calendar is being maintained in a simplified form until a new editor is found.
