Audition procedure

A committee consisting of the choir’s director and section leaders conducts the auditions. The audition consists of:

A prepared solo.  Accompanist provided or provide your own.

Tone and rhythm recognition.  We play it, you sing/clap it.

Moderately easy sight singing.

A short series of questions will be asked regarding your choral experience and you will have a chance to ask us questions regarding the choir.

Day(s)/time(s) of rehearsals Mondays, 7:00 - 9:30 p.m., late August through May.  Additional rehearsals will be required.
Place of rehearsals Arcade Church, 3927 Marconi Ave., Sacramento
Dates/venues of upcoming performances TBA
Other commitments In addition to Monday night rehearsals, at least two section rehearsals, two quartet rehearsals, and a dress rehearsal are mandatory for the December concert series.  A similar number of additional rehearsals are required for the March and May concert series.

Another expectation is attendance at a 2-day retreat in the mountains each fall.

The time commitment for singers is considerable.  Singers are often required to memorize a portion of each program.  Preparation of pieces outside3 of rehearsal is required.

Profile

"The Sacramento Master Singers, under the direction of Dr. Ralph Hughes, have established themselves as the area’s premier chamber choir. Established in 1982, the singers delight, challenge and inspire their audiences with seasons programmed to include premieres, classics and a wide array of musical selections.

"A dynamic part of Sacramento’s arts community, the choir presents six to ten concerts each season, and has received recognition for its artistic excellence. National and area premieres performed by the Master Singers include Benjamin Britten’s A.M.D.G., Arvo Part’s Te Deum, Robert Levin’s new completion of Mozart’s Requiem, and Alfred Schnittke’s Requiem.

"The choir is proud of its collaboration with many of the Sacramento area’s visual and performing artists, including the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, Sacramento Children’s Chorus, Folsom Symphony, American River College Jazz Bands, Capital Jazz Project, the Camellia Symphony Orchestra, the Sacramento Youth Symphony, the CSUS Percussion Group, the Sacramento Opera, R.S.V.P. and Celebration Arts.

"Those who sing with the Sacramento Master Singers are rewarded with deeply satisfying musical experiences and friendships that make us feel like a family."
