The Free Range Singers are part of
the Ubuntu Choirs Network (http://www.ubuntuchoirs.net/),
a community of choirs founded on the idea that the joy of group singing
is a universal birthright and that regardless of our musical background,
we can come together to harmonize our communities and improve our
world.
The group's annual Martin Luther
King Day concert event raises funds and awareness for a different local
charity each year. When not preparing for a big concert, Free Range
Singer sessions are open on a drop-in basis (though many singers still
choose to attend on a committed basis), and sometimes include small
performances at community events in the Davis area. Performance is
always optional. Accessibility is a higher priority than 100%
performance participation, and occasionally we have singers who choose
to sing without performing.
This year's theme is "Singing Our Roots." The rehearsal experience includes playful and social
singing, diverse repertoire, some attention to technique and musical
skill building, learning songs in parts or layers, rounds and chants,
learning more often by ear than on paper, and a break time with ginger
tea and snacks. The intention is for people to feel refreshed by a
mini-retreat each week to a singing community where fun, acceptance,
beauty and connection are the highest values. |
